25 Oct Dietary And Lifestyle Tips For A Healthy Pregnancy
Being pregnant is a normal part of many women’s lives, however, this is also a time to take particular care of your overall wellbeing to ensure that not only will your baby get the best start, but you also maintain your own optimal wellbeing. Other than adhering to the healthiest diet possible – incorporate the following tips into your life to ensure your pregnancy is a smooth and enjoyable experience.
• ✅ Ensure you get an adequate amount of sleep each night.
• ✅ Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day – even if this means more trips to the bathroom!
• ✅ If you don’t already, incorporate regular relaxation practices, such as pregnancy yoga and meditation. Not all postures (asanas) are appropriate in pregnancy, so follow the guidance of a suitably qualified yoga teacher.
• ✅ Maintain a reasonable work and personal schedule – allowing for adequate down-time and rest breaks when you need them. Take time to become aware of your body and stop when you need to.
• ✅ Maintain an appropriate level of daily physical activity – not only will this help boost your energy levels, but it will also help you maintain an appropriate pregnancy weight during each trimester.
• ✅ Manage any stressful circumstances as best you can. Meditation can be very supportive at this time. If you feel you require extra support – speak to your Practitioner, who will be able to offer some guidance and/or refer you to another Practitioner best qualified to help you.
• ✅ Minimise your toxin load by reducing your exposure to environmental pollutants, cigarette smoke, cosmetic and chemical cleaning products.
• ✅ While fish offers a source of protein during pregnancy, too much of the wrong sort may expose you to elevated levels of mercury and other toxic metals. Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) have the following recommendations for healthy fish consumption when pregnant.
Recommended Fish Consumption During Pregnancy
(1 serve = 150 g when cooked)
Smaller varieties of such as anchovies, sardines or trout 2 to 3 times a week.
OR
Orange roughy (sea perch) or catfish – these fish may accumulate higher levels of mercury
1 serve per week (and no other fish that week)
OR
Shark (flake), billfish (such as swordfish or marlin) – these predator fish may accumulate the highest levels of mercury 1 serve per fortnight (and no other fish that fortnight)
