20 Jul Activated nuts – Best For Children’s Health
Almonds are a healthy snack for kids to enjoy, but their hard texture can make them difficult to chew and digest. Activating nuts simply means they are soaked in water to soften them so they are easier to eat.
This process can also increase your child’s ability to absorb some of the nutrients contained within the nuts. Nuts are a good source of fibre, protein and healthy fats, as well as an excellent source of vitamin E, manganese and magnesium.
How to Soak & Toast the nuts
Soaking and activating nuts is very easy to do at home and also works out a lot cheaper than buying activated nuts from the store. Here’s my simple way to activate nuts for your child to enjoy..
Step 1
Place almonds in a bowl with enough warm filtered water to cover the nuts. Add sea salt and mix through the nuts. To work out how much salt is required, for every cup of nuts use 1 teaspoon of sea salt.
Step 2
Cover the bowl and leave on the bench overnight or for approximately 12 hours. Drain and rinse the nuts and pat them dry..
Step 3
To toast the nuts, arrange the nuts on a baking tray and set the oven at it’s lowest temperature – 50 degrees Celsius anywhere for 8 to 20 hours. The nuts are ready when they fare crunchy and feel and taste completely dry.
Healthy Children Tip: It is not recommended to feed whole nuts to children under 3 years of age.
