16 Jul 4 Ways to Supercharge Smoothies For Healthy Kids
Supercharging your child’s smoothie with nutrients is an excellent opportunity to supplement their diet with additional nutritional goodness they may not be willing to otherwise eat. Here are my 4 top suggestions to further nurture your children’s health and wellbeing.
Flaxseeds or Hemp seeds
Flaxseeds (also called linseeds) is one of the most concentrated plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids. They are also a rich source of antioxidants, B vitamins, dietary fibre, phytoestrogens and protein. Care needs to be taken when storing these little beauties – it needs to be a cool, dry place. Any exposure to heat and the oils can become rancid very quickly. Flaxseeds and hemp seeds are an ideal addition to your child’s diet if they don’t eat oily fish. These nutritious seeds can also be sprinkled over fruit, vegetables, cereal and yoghurt.
Peanut Butter & Nut Butters
Nut butters are versatile and nutritious and the perfect way to add protein and flavour to smoothies. Nut butters are high in healthy fats which is considered an essential nutrient for growing kids. Nuts also provide an excellent source of protein which supports children’s development and growth. Not all commercial nut butters are healthy so choose natural butters either from reputable brands or make your own at home.
Gelatine Powder
Gelatine is a superfood for your child’s gut health. I’m not talking about the packet jelly you might find at the food store, the type I’m talking about has medicinal powers that will support your child’s health from the ground up. Gelatine heals the gut wall which not only helps with the absorption of nutrients, this will also support children’s immune function and children’s brain function. Gelatine contains all the building blocks of protein needed to support kids skin health, bone health, improves children’s brain function and children’s immune function.
Chia Seeds
Despite their tiny size, chia seeds are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. They’re loaded with fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids and various micronutrients. Almost all of the carbohydrates in chia seeds are fibre and this has various beneficial effects on gut health. Chia seeds are also high in quality protein, much higher than most plant foods,. Protein is the most weight loss friendly macronutrient and can drastically reduce your child’s appetite and cravings for sugary foods and treats..
