Healthy Children – Develop A Love For Veggies Before Birth

Do you want your child to love their veggies? Well, you need to start early. In fact, what a woman eats during pregnancy not only nourishes her baby in the womb, but may also shape the food preferences of her child later in life. At 21 weeks following conception, your growing baby begins to gulp down several millilitres of amniotic fluid daily. That fluid surrounding your baby is actually flavoured by the foods and beverages you have eaten in the previous few hours. Consequently, eating a variety of foods throughout the day will help you to get the nutrients you require, as well as influence the palate of your child.

Foods to Enjoy in pregnancy

Protein-Rich Foods

  • Fish
  • Organic chicken/poultry
  • lean red meat
  • Free range eggs
  • Natural yoghurt (sugar-free)
  • Hard cheese (e.g. cheddar, tasty)
  • Pasteurised milk
  • Legumes and pulses
  • Tofu and tempeh
  • Raw nuts and seeds

 

Vegetables and Fruit

Choose a variety of colours with each meal to provide a wide-range of nutrients \/

  • Dark green leafy varieties (e.g. broccoli, spinach)
  • Salads (washed)
  • Eat vegetables raw or moderately cooked / Fresh herbs

 

Essential Fatty Acids (Good Fats)

  • Cold pressed oils on salads (extra virgin olive oil, flaxseed oil)
  • Cook with coconut oil
  • Avocado
  • Trout, mackerel, salmon, sardines and anchovies

 

Purified Water

  • Drink 2 litres of purified water daily

 

Herbal Tea

  • Naturally low caffeine tea (e.g. green tea, peppermint, ginger, chamomile, nettle, rooibos)

 

Sugar in Moderation

  • Raw honey
  • Stevia
  • Rice malt syrup

 

High Fibre Foods

  • Wholegrain breads and pasta
  • Brown rice
  • Fruits and vegetables
