Children’s Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Children’s Autism is a complex condition involving a series of neurodevelopmental disorders characterised by repetitive behaviours, social withdrawal and communication deficits. 

These children have significant impairments in social interaction, social skills and communication.  There are two subtypes of autism:  The first type is Regressive Autism and this is the most common form; this is where a child develops normally but between the ages of 12 months to 3 years old starts to loose speech and social skills.  The second type is Infantile Autism; where a child doesn’t reach their developmental milestones. 

Signs & symptoms of Children’s Autism include:

Children’s autism symptoms typically become clearly evident during early childhood, between 12 and 24 months of age. However, symptoms may also appear earlier or later.

  • ✅ Appears not to hear when spoken to
  • ✅ Has trouble expressing feelings
  • ✅ Doesn’t know how to connect with others
  • ✅ Doesn’t want to be touched, held or cuddled
  • ✅ Repeats the same words over and over
  • ✅ Responds to questions by repeating it rather than answering it
  • ✅ Has difficulty communicating needs
  • ✅ Avoids eye contact
  • ✅ Makes few gestures when talking e.g. pointing
  • ✅ Hand flapping
  • ✅ Rocking backwards and forwards
  • ✅ Flicking the light switch on and off
  • ✅ Head banging
  • ✅ Tapping ears

 

Can diet have an impact on autism?

Following a gluten-free and dairy-free diet alongside the avoidance of artificial colours, flavours, artificial and sweeteners has had a beneficial impact on children who experience autism symptoms. Dairy and gluten can cause inflammation which impacts brain function is some kids. It is highly recommended to follow this diet for a period of 3 months before making a decision
