11 Nutrients For The First & Second Trimesters

A new baby developing inside of you means getting adequate nutrition is essential. To achieve and maintain optimal health during your first and second trimester. Fiona can help you with an individualised nutrition plan and assess your diet to ensure you are optimising all the nutrients you and your baby need. This is particularly important as within Australia and New Zealand mineral deficiencies are common, with the average intake of certain minerals (ie: selenium, iodine) often falling below the recommended daily amounts.

Probiotics

Specific probiotic strains, such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium animalis ssp lactis, Bifidobacterium breve and Bifidobacterium longum can help maintain healthy maternal glucose balance which may reduce the risk of gestational diabetes, support healthy gastrointestinal and immune function, and reducing the risk of allergic-type conditions developing in children. Bifidobacterium taken during pregnancy (and during childhood) has been linked to a reduction in behavioural complaints in children.

Essential Fatty Acids

The essential fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), found in Algal oil or Fish oil, helps to support healthy foetal brain and nervous system development.

Zinc

Zinc is an important nutrient required for normal cell division, hormone metabolism, gene expression, protein synthesis and immune function – all essential for healthy foetal development.

Iron

Blood volume during pregnancy increases between 2.5 L to 3.7 L, making it essential to maintain a healthy dietary intake of iron throughout pregnancy. Iron is also vital for the baby’s brain and psychomotor development.

Vitamin D

Assists in calcium absorption and helps to support foetal bone development. Sufficient vitamin D levels promote healthy birth weight babies. It can be difficult to obtain an adequate daily vitamin D intake from diet alone during pregnancy.

Iodine

Iodine plays an important role in healthy foetal brain development and is an essential component of thyroid hormones, which are required for normal development and metabolism during pregnancy.

Chromium

An important mineral that can also help support healthy blood glucose levels.

Folic Acid

Supports normal DNA production and replication. Folic acid taken during preconception and early pregnancy may reduce the risk of birth defects affecting the brain and/or spinal cord, such as neural tube defects.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 levels decline throughout pregnancy. B6 may help to support the hormonal changes experienced when pregnant, and may also support energy levels.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is required for the production of DNA and normal formation of red blood cells. Low maternal intake of B12 can contribute to low infant B12 status at birth.

Choline

Choline is an important nutrient for healthy pregnancy and healthy foetal central nervous system brain health and cognitive function. Lutein Lutein is involved in vision and nervous system development and provides a protective action on the brain.
