5 Natural Remedies to Soothe Teething Pain

Teething is a painful process for babies and parents alike. It’s very hard to watch your baby suffer through this process. Most infants experience this pain when their teeth break or cut through their gums. Babies usually start teething between 6 and 12 months old. And by the time your child reaches their 3rd birthday, they should have their primary set of 20 teeth.

teething symptoms

Each child will experience a unique mix of symtpoms, with the most common being mild irritability and a lack of appetite. Some ‘lucky’ babies have few or no symptoms as their teeth break through the gums while others will experience one or more of the following symptoms.

  • Drooling
  • Crying
  • Sore and tender gums
  • red and swollen gums
  • Chewing on hard objuects
  • General irritability and moodiness
  • loss of appetitie
  • A rash on their chin, similar to eczema
  • Pain that spreads to ears, cheek, chin and shoulders

Natural Remedies to Soothe sore gums

1. Silicon teething rings

Most babies will chew on these to ease their discomfort. It’s best to avoid plastic teething rings to avoid unnecessary exposure to harmful chemicals found in plastic. Teething rings can also be placed in the freezer to help numb their gums to relieve pain and inflammation.

2. Amber Teething Necklace

These necklaces are made from Baltic amber and is not a stone but fossilised tree sap that has been cultivated and polished. Baltic amber contains a substance called succinic acid, a substance that can be used to relieve pain. Babies are not meant to chew these necklaces, instead contact with the skin is necessary for the necklace to work. The warmth from the skin is believed to release small amounts of succinic acid where it can enter the bloodstream via the skin.

3. Remove Drool to stop the Rash

Some babies will develop a rash on their chin while teething because of increased drooling, and their chin can become sore, irritated and chapped. To help avoid this uncomfortable situation, gently remove saliva with a soft cloth and apply a natural product such as coconut oil (from your kitchen cupboard) or almond oil to act as a barrier to protect their skin from irritation.

4. Cold Compress

Tie a knot in a clean washcloth, soak it in water and place it in the freezer. Allow your child to chew on the cloth to soothe their gums.. You could also freeze your babies pacifier (dummy) or bottle nipple (half fill their bottle and place in upside down in the freezer). Another option is to freeze their spoon so when it’s in their mouth it will numb their gums to help relieve some of the pain and inflammation.

5. Cold fruit & vegetables

When your child’s gums are sore, giving them soft food that doesn’t require lots of chewing will help. Cooler temperatures will help to soothe the inflammation, therefore fruit and veggies from the fridge will help to keep them comfortable and hydrated.

Remedies to Avoid
