Preconception Care For Couples

Conception involves both female and male partners equally. That is why it is essential to support the optimal health of both parents in the time leading up to conception, in order to give your new baby the very best start in life. The preconception journey is an opportunity to lay the foundations for a healthy pregnancy, birth and of course, a beautiful, healthy child. This phase can also be a challenge for the 1 in 6 couples affected by fertility issues. It is equally important that both men and women take the time to prepare themselves during the preconception period, to ensure the best traits possible are passed onto the child.

When it comes to timings, aim for at least 4 months prior to conception to influence pregnancy outcomes, and the health of the developing foetus. This provides a great opportunity for you and your partner to begin improving your health and correcting any nutritional deficiencies.

By taking action before pregnancy, you can help prevent many future complications for yourself, improve your ability to conceive, support your growing foetus and influence the health of your new child. Fiona Stock, your Melbourne Naturopath is the best person to discuss any questions or concerns with, and can help you individualise a preconception plan that gives you, your partner and your future baby the best possible start.

In women, the egg maturation process occurs 3 to 4 months before she ovulates.

Sperm take on average 72 to 76 days to develop and mature before being temporarily stored prior to ejaculation.

Fact 5

Research has indicated that nutritional deficiencies, stress, illness and toxin exposure, can all influence the health of the sperm and/or egg prior to conception.
