How Cottage Pie Benefits Healthy Kids

Cottage Pie made with beef is also called Shepherd’s when made with lamb is a firm family favourite. Minced meat cooked with grated vegetables, and baked with a creamy veggie mash topping. Yum! This cottage pie for toddlers can be made in individual portions sizes in small ramekins making them easy to freeze. Or you can choose to make the same recipe in one larger dish for the whole family to enjoy.

This cottage pie recipe is suitable for children of all age groups it’s a tasty and nutritious meal!

Ingredients

Veggie Mash

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 180oC (350oF). Cut your vegetables of choice into chunks or florets.
  2. Using a pot of boiling water or a steamer, cook veggies until well cooked.  (Cauliflower 10-15 minutes, sweet potato and potato 20-30 minutes). 
    Allow to cool slightly.
  3. Either mash the vegies by hand or in a food processor.  Add butter and enough milk to make the mash smooth and creamy.  Season with sea salt and pepper.

  4. In either a family size dish or individual ramekins, fill the bottom with bolognaise sauce and top with the mashed vegetables.

    1. Bake in the oven until heated through and light brown.
