The role of the immune system
Like brave soldiers, the immune system cells travel throughout the body searching for viral and bacterial infections and other foreign invaders to destroy. At the first sign of trespassers, they charge into battle. When working at its optimal best, it does a superb job of keeping your child healthy and free of illness. When you nurture the immune system it will repay you by supporting your child’s overall health and wellbeing.
How the immune system works
The immune system is a complex army powered by different types of cells, organs and tissues which work together with military precision. When the immune system encounters a foreign invader, known as a pathogen, it mounts an attack called an immune response. Antibodies are specialised proteins made by the immune system in response to an invasion. They cannot kill a pathogen but rather target and mark the invader so killer-type cells know where to launch their attack and destroy them. How does the immune system know it’s under attack? Harmful pathogens have individual identifying markers called antigens. A robust immune system is able to detect a specific antigen as it enters the body and in response produce a unique antibody. These tailor-made antibodies are able to lock onto the antigen and signal immune system headquarters to send in killer cells to destroy the pathogen.
Healthy immunity begins in the gut
Because 80 percent of the immune system is interlaced within the wall of the gut, it needs a strong leak-proof barrier to keep it safe from coming into contact with toxic substances and function effectively. In this respect the immune system and friendly bacteria work in unison to defend against foreign invaders. Nutrition is another key influence, as the immune system needs specific vitamins and minerals to keep it healthy.
