6 Common Pregnancy Complaints

As a busy Melbourne Naturopath, these are the top questions I often get asked by my pregnant clients. As every pregnancy is different, the answer to these questions may help you on your pregnancy journey.

I am suffering from morning sickness

Up to 70% to 80% of women experience mild to moderate nausea, and 50% vomiting. Symptoms can occur at any time of day and generally involve changes in appetite and aversions to food. For many women, these symptoms resolve after the first trimester.
✅ Eat foods higher in vitamin B6, such as animal protein, eggs, nuts, potatoes and bananas.
✅ Consume protein with each meal and snack to help maintain stable blood glucose levels.
✅ Avoid getting too hungry, as this tends to increase nausea.
✅ Maintain fluid intake – smoothies and juices may be easier to consume.
✅ Increase rest and avoid excessive fatigue.

I have really bad reflux

✅ Avoid eating and drinking large volumes, and aim to consume smaller meal sizes with increased frequency.
✅ Aim to minimise or avoid chocolate, coffee, citrus and tomato juices, as well as carbonated beverages, as these tend to contribute to symptoms of reflux.
✅ Ensure that you sit up after main meals, and avoid lying down for at least an hour after meals.

I constantly feel fatigued

✅ Make sure that you are getting 7 to 8 hours sleep each night. Maintain a sleep routine that supports your energy requirements.
✅ Allow for adequate rest time after busier periods.
✅ Maintain an optimal diet – sufficient nutrition is required for adequate energy production.
✅ Magnesium, B vitamins and iron levels can impact your energy – speak to your Practitioner about how to monitor your iron status, magnesium and B vitamin intake.
✅ Manage any emotional stress that is draining your energy – gentle exercise, meditation, and massage can all be beneficial. Ask for extra support if you feel you need it.

My muscles are achy and I am experiencing cramps

✅ Consuming a diet rich in leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, eggs, parsnips and molasses can help increase magnesium intake.
✅ Supplementation of a highly absorbable form of magnesium, this will help to provide relief of muscle related symptoms.

I keep getting colds and flus

✅ Make sure that you are eating a diverse wholefood diet. Nutritional deficiencies or insufficiencies such as Vitamin C or Zinc may reduce your immune defences and increase your susceptibility to infection.
✅ Ensure you are getting sufficient rest – a lack of sleep can deplete your immune system.
✅ Reduce the risk of exposure by staying away from people who are unwell.
✅ Speak to your Practitioner, as certain probiotics have been shown to help enhance the immune system.

My bowel habits have changed and I am experiencing constipation

✅ It is important to increase fibre (ie: plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit) and water intake to help with bowel regularity.
✅ Consider taking the probiotic strain Lactobacillus plantarum 299v and the prebiotic partially hydrolysed guar gum, to assist bowel movements, while the mineral magnesium may also help exert a natural laxative effect.

Tips for Healthy Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding helps give your babies the best start in life, providing key nutrients for health, development and protection against disease.
✅ Try to use the first few days after birth to get your position and attachment in a way that is comfortable for you and baby. This can help prevent problems down the track.
