Some children seem to finish one meal and immediately ask what they can eat next. A sudden increase in appetite can be completely normal, particularly during periods of growth or increased physical activity.
It is useful to look at what the child is eating, not simply how often they ask for food.
Could My Child Be Having a Growth Spurt?
Possibly. Children’s appetites naturally fluctuate, and periods of rapid growth can increase energy requirements. If they are suddenly eating more and also shooting up in height, growth may be part of the picture.
Are Their Meals Actually Filling?
Look at meal composition. A meal containing protein, healthy fats, fibre and whole-food carbohydrates may provide a more substantial nutritional foundation than a very light snack-style meal.
Where Is the Protein?
This is one of the simplest questions parents can ask. Protein foods can include eggs, meat, chicken, fish, nuts, seeds, legumes and other suitable protein-rich foods.
Are Snacks Replacing Meals?
A child who grazes continuously can become trapped in a cycle: they eat too little at meals, become hungry shortly afterwards, snack and then are not hungry for the next meal.
More structure around meals and snacks can make appetite patterns easier to understand.
Could They Be Thirsty?
Children sometimes ask for food when they have had very little water. Regular access to water is another simple foundation.
Look at the Whole Week
Ask whether activity has increased, whether the child is growing, whether meals contain protein, whether they are grazing continuously, whether they are eating proper meals and whether sleep has changed.
