29 May Coconut Water Kefir
Coconut water kefir is a sparkling drink and a healthy alternative to regular soft drinks that healthy kids will love. It’s a supercharged powerful probiotic and excellent for improving digestive health and boosting immunity. Here is a simple recipe to make coconut water kefir at home.
Healthy Children’s Recipe
Ingredients
1.5 litres 100% pure coconut water
Water kefir starter culture*
Method
Place coconut water into a 2 litre sterilised glass jar and add starter culture.
Stir the mix using a wooden spoon (never use metal utensils) and leave on the bench-top to ferment for 24-48 hours (24 hours for warm weather and 48 hours for colder weather). Taste the mix and it should be tangy and not sweet.
Healthy Children’s Tip
You can enjoy this delicious drink as is or add flavours, which you add after fermenting and before refrigeration. Either add your favourite seasonal fruit or try these suggestions.
Mango and Passionfruit: Add 4 passionfruit and ¼ finely sliced mango
Raspberry: Add 8 fresh or frozen raspberries.
When making a batch of kefir, it’s important to ensure all utensils and jars are sterilised so that you don’t start cultivating bad bacteria. Use glass storage jars over plastic because the bacteria can chew through the plastic. Also, ensure the coconut water is at room temperature to allow the fermentation process to take place, if they water is cold this doesn’t happen.
- Purchase Water kefir starter cultures online or at a health food store. Kefir are grain-like colonies of yeast and a potent source of a variety of strains of lactic acid bacteria. These help to restore and nurture the balance of friendly bacteria living in your child’s gut. Through the fermenting period of approximately 24 hours, the micro-organisms in the grains multiply and feed off sugars producing lactic acid and various other acids and gases to make a powerful probiotic
and delicious carbonated drink. Kefir grains are available in some health food stores or are readily available to purchase online.
