Dark or bluish circles beneath a child’s eyes can make an otherwise energetic child look exhausted. They do not have one single explanation.
Their appearance can be influenced by genetics, skin tone, sleep, nasal congestion, allergies and general health.
Could It Simply Be Genetics?
Yes. The skin beneath the eyes is thin and underlying blood vessels can be more visible in some children. Some families naturally have more prominent under-eye shadows.
Can Poor Sleep Make Dark Circles More Noticeable?
Sleep is worth looking at, but do not ask only how many hours the child spends in bed. Consider night waking, restlessness, snoring, mouth breathing, teeth grinding and whether they wake refreshed.
What About Nasal Congestion and Allergies?
Persistent nasal congestion can affect the appearance around the eyes. Children with hay fever may also rub their eyes frequently or experience watery or itchy eyes.
Dark circles alongside snoring, mouth breathing or persistent congestion give us more information than dark circles alone.
Could Iron Be Involved?
Pale skin and tiredness can occur when iron status is low, which may make the area beneath the eyes appear more noticeable.
Dark circles by themselves do not tell us that a child has low iron. Look at energy, diet, growth, concentration, appetite and iron-rich food intake as well.
What Else Should Parents Observe?
Notice whether the child also experiences tiredness, snoring, mouth breathing, nasal congestion, hay fever, restless sleep, poor appetite or very restricted eating.
The combination of symptoms is generally more informative than the circles alone.
